Italy - Pisa, Venice

The trip did not start off that well. We had to catch the 9+ am flight on Sat at the budget airport which is a good 1 hr 50 min bus ride away to another town. And so we had to take the first bus which is at 6am from Oslo Central station. Problem is the T-bane (mrt quivalent) doesn't start operting until 6.45am during the weekends. We didn't want to take a cab which would have cost us 100+nok for such a short distance to the central station and so we spent the night at the bus terminal.

After dinner on Fri night we packed some sandwiches and wrapped ourselves up warmly and took the 12.15am T-bane to the central station. Initially we had planned to freeze out in the open as the train station will be closed after 1am but luckily for us there is a section of the bus terminal that remains open as there are a few buses in the wee hours of the morning. It was torturing to try to sleep and keep an eye on our luggages at the same time. The extreme cold wind that came in whenever the auto door opens doesn't help. And also alot of ppl are staring at us! We are getting used to being stared at coz I suppose we're asians, and we certainly looked like a bunch of kids who is running away from home in the middle of the night!! Finally after a few torturous hours 6am arrived and we're on our way to Pisa!!

While in Italy, how can we miss out their famous gelato ice-creams. We had 1 ice-cream cone everyday and sometimes 2 cones! Each cone is usually 2 scoops. Sinful!! There is nothing much to talk about for Pisa as we only went to see the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa during the few hours transit time we had. After that we took an evening train over to Florence. The next day we took a train to Venice and boy, I like Venice! Venice is the city I like most out of the 4 places we visited while in Italy. It is truly a water city. The main mode of transport is by water. Almost every house has a mini jetty behind their house and they have their own boats. We took the water bus to get around Venice. I suspect there isn't any vehicles in Venice at all. Even if there is, it will be just the bare minimum for we didn't see any roads meant for vehicles at all. Shall let the photos do the talking now..

La Piazza del Duomo

Leaning Tower of Pisa

Look at the base of this tower!

Oh no the tower is crushing down on me!

Let me support it with 1 finger! Hehe..

Pisa Central Station - on our way to Florence

Our hostel in Florence

Our first dinner in Florence. 6 euro buffet. It is suppose to have sandwiches, pizza, salads and a drink. But end up our selection is limited. So we had many plates of these for dinner. =p

Upon stepping out of Venice train station

The train station

Water flows even to small alleys like this!

Houses by the water

The Gondola - the people rowing them are all in stripped blue/red shirts and they sing while brining you around!! But it is too expensive (120 euro) for us to take a ride on it. We are contented to buy the 13 euro day pass for the water bus (the boat).

Masks masks masks everywhere! Venice is famous for its mask and glass-blowing technique

I think there are more pigeons in this square than people. You fill you palm with some nuts and all the pigeons will flock to you and land all over you. Yucks!

Look! The Coca-Cola word is formed using pigeons! Wonder how they get those birds to stay still.

These pretty wine glasses are made using the glass-blowing technique! It is expensive. There furniture and accessories there are beautiful!

Ponte dei Sospiri - The Bridge of Sigh
It was built in the 16th century. This enclosed bridge made of limestone is said to connect the old prisons to the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace (gothic palace in Venice). The view from the bridge is the last view of Venice that convicts saw before their imprisonment and prisoners will sigh at their last view of beautiful Venice before taken down to the cells under the palace.

Local legend also has it that lovers who kiss on a gondola at sunset under the bridge will have eternal love.

Them with their masks that cost 10 euros each!
